Holistic and Integrative Medicine

What is Holistic and Integrative Medicine?

Holistic medicine is the art and science of healing that addresses the whole person as an interdependent unit of body, mind, and spirit. The practice of holistic medicine integrates conventional and alternative therapies to prevent and treat disease. Most importantly it focuses on promoting optimal health. Optimal health is defined as the unlimited and unimpeded flow of life force energy through body, mind, and spirit.

Holistic medicine includes analysis of physical, nutritional, environmental, emotional, spiritual and lifestyle elements. The holistic practice fosters patient education and participation in the healing process requiring dedication and time that conventional medicine cannot provide.

What is a Holistic Physician?

A holistic physician: 1) views the patient as being ultimately responsible for his/her well being; 2) fosters and maintains a partnership with the patient, using therapies with which both feel comfortable; 3) evaluates and recommends treatment options that address the causes of an illness, as well as the symptoms.

A holistic physician may choose to integrate from a variety of both conventional and “alternative” treatments and therapies. Together, the patient and the physician work to develop an optimal course of treatment. This partnership is a powerful approach to healing and is the cornerstone of the holistic philosophy.

What are alternative therapies?

Alternative therapies are those not normally offered by conventional medical personnel. They include but are not limited to, nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy, spinal manipulation and body work medicine, “energy medicine,” spiritual attunement, relaxation training and stress reduction and elimination, biofeedback and acupuncture.

What illnesses can be treated?

Holistic medicine can be the treatment of choice and/or have a dramatic healing effect on virtually every injury or illness.  In most patients and in most instances, this can be accomplished without the use of traditional, toxic medications. Some of the more responsive conditions are; hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), diabetes, hypertension, cancer-both prevention and treatment, asthma, allergies, chronic sinusitis, coronary artery disease, gastro-esophageal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), auto-immune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, lupus), osteoporosis, menopause, andropause (male menopause), sexual dysfunction, depression, mood disorders, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Why is the holistic approach to medicine effective?

At the turn of the century the three leading causes of death were tuberculosis, smallpox and influenza — each caused by a single infectious agent. Today, the three leading causes of death are heart disease, cancer and stroke — multifactorial diseases of civilization. This means that the toxins infiltrating our diets, environment and even our societal roles, cumulatively drive us away from our normal state of wellness.

To help achieve this natural state of wellness an approach must incorporate attention to all three aspects of a person’s life.

Starting with the body, we look to proper nutrition and supplementation as a foundation to health. Less toxic and more nutritious and unadulterated foods play a vital role. Reversing and eradicating damaging medical conditions are also addressed.

As a result of toxins, hormonal and nutritional deficiencies, life stressors and genetics, imbalances occur that produce symptoms of depression, fatigue and other mood disorders. Using a team approach consisting of a mental health counselor, our nutritionist, a homeopath, and physician, the mind is gently eased back to its previous state of good health, typically without medications.

Having a spiritual connection and feeling “a part of,” with a purpose in life, has been shown to be the single most important factor in determining longevity! If you know that you have a path in life and are needed, it creates an anchor of health. By taking an accurate and lengthy history of prior and current endeavors, the spiritual direction of the patient becomes apparent.

Our guiding philosophy is that multiple factors, affecting multiple aspects of life, require multiple approaches for optimal results. With this in mind we can make tremendous progress towards your wellness.
